do you think there is any credibility to the thought that Jerry did less drugs either going onstage or "around" the time of the shows when touring as JGB as opposed to the Dead?? His playing was just so different - not even considering the different "styles" of music. He was like a whole different man and musician between those two bands. (maybe this has been brought up before on this site - if so, sorry for the repeat)

I think it's written in someone's book (Rock Scully's?)that the JGB gigs were to raise funds for his Persian habit so I doubt it. I think he just felt free to jam since this was HIS band and he could do as he pleased. Whatever the reason, his shows were great.

I've read that wife #3 had a blatant dislike for John Kahn as a bad influence on Jerry, seems they both had the Persian hook in them. Ozzie Ahlers, who did a brief keyboard stint with JGB , said that there was a significant change in tempo when the boys were hitting the stuff. Methinks Ozzie's short stint was due to his intolerance of this kind of behavior.
Oh yes. And Colin Powell sez so.

well, there are now two "nay" votes - therefore the credibility to that thought has now greatly diminished :)
Jer just must have been having more fun with the JGB scene/music in general.

In the early years the side bands were for growth and experimentation outside the Dead. (Wales,PERRO,NRPS,OAITW,LOM)He just couldn't cover the ground any other way.
You have to give up something of yourself to the band. As many members have said, they would introduce a song to the band and never knew what they were going to get. Each member played what they felt about the piece, not what one person wanted to hear. I believe that is why so many numbers were dropped over the years, they didn't like the result.
In the later years, Garcia definatley kept the band together for a release of pressure from the Dead but also for the Dope. All band members followed his lead and he called all the tunes and arraingements. Could play any song any way he wanted.
Kahn was notorious for his usage. No stress for Garcia about using, actually a good excuse. Thick as thieves. Did you notice that Kahn started to wear all black in the later years? His knickname was Mule!
Listen to any pre 80 garcia and then some 90's stuff. Some brief greatness in spots but overall no comparison. Just like the Dead. IMHO

Thanks for the post. Agreed of course that, like the GD, there are weak spots in Jerry's side-projects. Lately i've been in an early '80s, mid-'70s JGB/LOM/Garcia-Kahn mode, and in both those periods are some really brilliant shows. It's too bad though about Jer's habit, but what he gave us taking all in all, was more than the bulk of artists yesterday and today. Cheers.
